Raspberry Serrano Sparkling Margarita

May 5, 2016

Raspberry-Serrano-Sparkling-Margarita-Feature

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  When we moved to Napa, I was 100% sure about our new adventure until the last week or so before our move.  Swept up in the excitement of buying a house, it hit me like a ton of bricks as we were packing that we were actually, really leaving LA.  I was nervous about leaving the beach and trail I was accustomed to (where would we go for a run?) and everyday conveniences like our grocery store down the street where I knew everyone by name.  I worried about no longer working out of our office every day and already missed our teammates (and their dogs!).  Additionally, there is such an amazing creative community in LA that I felt we were just starting to tap into – as a creative at ONEHOPE, what was I thinking leaving that town?  But aside from all of that, the major thing that made my heart sink, was leaving behind all of our favorite restaurants.

LA is in a bit of a food Renaissance and it’s tough to find a bad meal there.  Jake is gone so much for work and we both travel a ton on weekends for weddings and events, so on the off-chance that we’re both home for a weekend, brunch is our jam.  One of our favorite places in Hermosa Beach for brunch (and dinner) is Palmilla – a Mexican restaurant on the pier that we would walk to from our place.  I’m sure it sounds crazy that I would have a margarita for basically breakfast, but anything goes when you’re eating eggs at noon – am I right? 😉  Palmillia is famous for its Raspberry Serrano Margarita – so perfectly tangy, spicy, sweet and salty all at once – and since we won’t be in LA for one of our favorite holidays today, I knew I needed to find a way to replicate it for Cinco de Mayo in the Bay Area.  I created a Sparkling Margarita for ONEHOPE last year and it’s one of my favorite cocktails ever, so adding a dash of Sparkling on top of this guy just takes it to the next level.  Enjoy!

PS: On a personal level, while we miss our LA restaurants, we’re having a ton of fun exploring the food scene of Napa Valley – it definitely wasn’t a bad place to move to on that front 😉

Fig + Rosemary Sparkling Cocktail

September 23, 2015

Fall-Fig-Cocktail-Feature

Happy First Day of Fall, guys!  Aren’t you so excited?!  Jake and I flew back from New York on Monday after a whirlwind trip to celebrate the marriage of two of our close friends and I was REALLY hoping for some fall weather while there, but we were SOL.  The temps were in the mid 80’s for almost the entire time, with the exception of ONE afternoon when we could feel the familiar crisp autumn air that I miss so much now that I call LA home.  Thankfully, it has cooled off at least a little and I don’t feel so weird burning a Pumpkin Candle now that it isn’t 100 degrees in our house 😉

Every year, I tell myself that I’m going to experiment with figs in the fall (I’ve never cooked with them before now!), but they’re so hard to find and something else always seems to take priority. By the time I make the effort, they always seem to be out of season and impossible to track down. I’ve been dying to get my hands on some this year to mix into cocktails and to add a little something sweet to the fall entertaining cheese boards we’ve been crafting for work. Finding them proved to be difficult since figs aren’t generally carried at most big-chain grocery stores, but when I finally spotted them at a downtown LA farmer’s market, I grabbed all I could and headed straight for the kitchen. After a bit of research on fig cocktails, I stumbled across this one that sounded too good to pass up. I made a few proportional adjustments to accommodate our bubbly and it turned out SO deliciously perfect. I whip up a ton of cocktails for work and our team is pretty vocal at this point with what they like and don’t like so I was pleasantly surprised to hear that this was one of the favorites we’ve ever made. Check it out below!

Timing: 1 hour total
Yield: 4 cocktails

I N G R E D I E N T S

Rosemary Simple Syrup

1 cup honey
1 cup water
3 sprigs of fresh rosemary

Cocktail

1/2 cup fig puree (2 cups fresh figs, 4 tbs. water blended in a food processor)
4 oz. chilled vodka
Juice from 2 lemons (peel for garnish)
4 oz. Rosemary Simple Syrup
ONEHOPE Sparkling Brut
Ice

D I R E C T I O N S

  1. Combine honey, water, and fresh rosemary into a sauce pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, stirring occasionally until the mixture has reduced by half. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely. We transferred to a jar and placed it in the freezer for 30 minutes.
  2. While simple syrup is chilling, remove stems from figs and place all but two figs in a food processor. Pulse to puree until consistency resembles that of apple sauce. Set aside.
  3. Using a citrus peeler, peel your lemons (4 ribbons – one for each cocktail). Juice both lemons and set juice aside.
  4. Once your simple syrup has chilled completely, combine syrup, fig puree, chilled vodka, lemon juice, and ice in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously.
  5. Fill two glasses with ice and pour cocktail mixture into each glass. Top with ONEHOPE Sparkling Brut and garnish with lemon peel, fresh rosemary, and one half fig each. Cheers!

Pumpkin Pie Sparkling Sgroppino

October 3, 2014

Pumpkin-Pie-Sgroppino-6

Now THIS is something to try this weekend.  It’s going to be really, really hot in LA (insert frantic/wailing/angry emoji face here) and I’m at my breaking point with the heat.  I want chicken chili and pumpkin pie, y’all!  This, however is one way to curb the heat with everything you love about fall blended into a cocktail of sheer bliss.  It’s pretty simple to make and your guests will be blown away.

Pumpkin Pie Sparkling Sgroppino

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total: 10
Serves: 2
Ingredients

1 cups chilled vodka
1 pint pumpkin gelato (I found this at Whole Foods, but if you can’t track it down yet, vanilla gelato with a dash of pumpkin pie spice is a great substitute)
1/2 bottle ONEHOPE Sparkling Wine
1 cup ice
Ground Cinnamon (for garnish)
Caramel Sauce
4 ground honey graham cracker crumbs (for rimmer)
Directions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and frothy.
  2. Rim chilled martini glasses with graham cracker crumbs (a tip is to dip it in caramel sauce first and then in the graham cracker crumbs).
  3. Pour mixture into glasses and top with a sprinkle of cinnamon
Cheers!

Apple Cider Mimosa

September 26, 2014

Apple-Cider-Mimosa-6

Happy, happy Friday!  I hope you had a wonderful first week of fall – yay!  After a long weekend in Michigan and then a short week of playing catchup from being gone for a few days, I’m more than ready for a weekend at home to do a few projects and test out some new recipes 🙂

One of the major things I was hoping to do while visiting the family was to take a trip to the cider mill because those just don’t exist in California.  Unfortunately, while enroute to the mill, it started POURING and we had to turn around and call it a day.  We picked up some fresh apple cider from the market the following morning and whipped these up to sort of ease the blow of not being able to partake in one of my favorite midwestern traditions.  Just in time for the weekend, I wanted to pass along a super fun fall spin on the classic mimosa 🙂  They are SO good!  I promise you will love them!

Apple Cider Mimosa

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total: 10
Serves: 1

Ingredients

1 tsp brown sugar
1 ounce scotch (optional)
2 ounces fresh apple cider
4 ounces ONEHOPE Sparkling Wine
Apple slices for garnish
Caramel sauce & brown sugar for rimming (optional)

Directions

1.  If rimming your flutes, dip the rim of the glass into caramel.  Using a small plate or bowl works best for this.  After coating the rim, dip your glass into brown sugar.
2.  Combine brown sugar, scotch and apple cider in a flute.
3.  Top with ONEHOPE Sparkling wine and garnish with fresh apple slices.

Recipe adapted from here.
