    November 8, 2012

    Before 2011, I had never been to New York which seems crazy to me now that I’ve been fortunate to have ventured there a few times since… AND LOVE IT!  From the architecture to the hustle and bustle to the food and the people – nothing compares to it.  There is something new around every corner and I always leave heartbroken that I have to go home so soon.  On a recent visit, a friend of mine took me on a tour around ABC Carpet & Home and I about died.  GAH!  I could go on and on about how obsessed I was with everything in sight, but I’ll spare you from my design high rant and just show you the pictures instead 🙂

    In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, it absolutely pains me to think of so much of that city under water and the number of people left to start over from scratch.  A few of my favorite artists and designers are doing everything in their power to help.  Be sure to take a look below.

    {Mercury glass!}

    {Clearly I was too excited about this mercury glass explosion to take a straight photo.  Love.}

    {Blue and green heaven}

    {These were actually ceramic even though they look like recycled aluminum cans.  I feel a DIY project coming on!}

    {So much inspiration!  Future kitchen cabinet and bookshelf ideas}

    {Intricate, hand blown tumblers and flutes}

    {I could have taken this entire tray!}

    {I’m sorry… but original chevron flooring?!  Please come home with me}

    {Industrial pendants}

    {Vintage window pane room partitions.  Aaaamazing idea}

    {Gorgeous table}

    {Recycled glass bottles for days}

    {Rifle Paper Company notebooks.  I’ll take seven.  Thanks}

    {Cordials that reminded me of my Grandma’s}

    {Yes!}

    {Ohhh just my favorite Madeline Weinrib rug IN LIFE}

    {This makes me want to change my color scheme 😉 }

    {And this makes me want to keep my color scheme and just buy all new rugs}

    Hurricane Sandy Relief

    The proceeds from this gorgeous Caitlin McGauley print are being donated to the American Red Cross to help the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.  I absolutely adore her work.

    I love this bag from Wedding Chicks!  100% of proceeds are donated to the American Red Cross.

    If you would just like to make a donation, please do so here.  Any amount will help.

    In Good Health…

    November 6, 2012

    It’s been forever since I’ve blogged.  Seriously.  Forever.  Over 6 months to be exact, which feels like an absolute lifetime.  There are so many bloggers that come and go… are so inconsistent and I never wanted that to be me, but there were a few things that happened this spring that caused me to go MIA.  Allow me to explain.

    To be truthful, in April of this year I got sick and after visiting a slew of doctors, I was diagnosed with Interstitial Cystitis.  Until now, I’ve talked to literally no one (other than a handful of my closest family members and friends and my doctor of course) about it.  I deeply contemplated ever discussing it publicly, but the more I learned about it and the more women I met who had also been diagnosed with I.C., the more I felt that it needed to be shared.

    So what is it?  If you haven’t clicked on the Mayo Clinic link yet, basically, while some people have the misfortune of developing ulcers in their stomach lining due to stress, diet, etc., there are others of us who develop an ulcer in our bladder lining instead.  (See why it’s so hard to talk about?)  But what is worse is that I.C. is so grossly under and mis-diagnosed and is something that is so common in women that the dialogue must start somewhere.  I wouldn’t exactly call myself an advocate for I.C. awareness, but if someone stumbles upon this at some point while googling this disease and I’m able to help them in any way, I’ll be absolutely thrilled.

    My story of finally being diagnosed with I.C. is just as it is for hundreds of thousands of women every year: See a doctor for what you think is a simple lady issue (a routine UTI – ouch!) – doesn’t go away after a round of antibiotics – try another type of antibiotic or two… or three – all unsuccessful.  If you’re one of the 80% of American women who has suffered from a UTI in the past, you know how absolutely horrible these things are.  Now imagine that pain for several weeks as you get passed around from doctor to doctor to try to figure out what the real issue is.  It is absolutely maddening, horrifying and painful beyond description and all the while alienating beyond belief.  Who do you talk to about this?  How do you tell your employer what you are going through and why you’re missing work or why you’re so sleep deprived from waking up every hour of the night?  And the worst part about it is that once you finally know what is wrong with you, your doctor likely has no idea how it developed in your body specifically or how to cure it.  Yes.  After all of that, you are stuck with absolutely no answers.  The treatment options are almost as terrible as waiting it out to see if it goes away on its own, and the medications only treat one symptom or another and have their expected arm’s-length of side effects.  Thankfully, in my case, my doctor was able to pinpoint my case of I.C. to stress and unusually high levels of acidity in my body.  I understood the stress part of it, but acidity?

    Track back to FIDM finals.  Not only was I working a part to full-time job with the amount start-ups that I had going on, but I was also going to school, pulling all nighters left and right to finish school projects and was basically living off of coffee.  At the end of the night, I would come home, eat something that was high in acidity (salads with tomatoes, anything with hot sauce or jalapenos added) and drink a glass of wine.  My favorite non-alcoholic drink of all time to keep me going when I was tired of coffee?  The Arnold Palmer – made with iced tea and lemonade.  Acid.  Berry smoothie for breakfast?  Acid.  Once I started picking apart my diet and really taking a closer look at what I was putting into my body, it was crystal clear.  I had unintentionally done this to myself over the course of the past few years. The stress and lack of sleep combined with chugging coffee to stay alive and then wine to de-stress at the end of the day was inadvertently killing me from the inside out.

    Thankfully, I was considered to have a moderate case of I.C.  To this day, I can hardly describe the pain I went through as moderate, but the more I learn about this disease, the more I can put it in perspective and count my blessings… It really could have been a lot worse.  I was able to get my symptoms under control by completely eliminating acidic foods from my diet wherever possible.  I was no longer allowed to drink wine (my favorite thing in the world) and while coffee was on my “no” list, I don’t think I can survive without it, so I cut back to 1/2 cup per day.  Slowly, I would have one good day and then another and another.  Some days I would slip up – eat something spicy or have a sip too many of what seemed like a miniscule glass of wine and I would pay the price, but I learned what I could and could not tolerate and kept it under control.  Slowly, but surely by mid summer, I was almost back to normal.

    So what’s next?  I.C. isn’t completely curable – it can only be managed.  Some people relapse six months later, a year later or never… but your body has a great way of telling you when you’ve been pushing it too far.  Even now I have days when I don’t feel perfect, but I know what caused it and I know that I need to take it easy.  I have been able to implement acidic foods back into my diet, but now know that I can’t have them constantly like I used to and I needed to learn my boundaries.  Additionally, after learning about how common this disease is, it’s important to communicate about it.  If you ever find yourself with I.C., you’ll most likely suffer a bought with depression (as did I) and can’t imagine talking about it.  But I promise… talking about it will help you heal.  Taking the step to talk about it helped me learn that one of my very best friends from FIDM was also going through the same thing and was diagnosed just a few weeks prior to me.  Her condition was far more severe, but I believe that we were able to help each other by simply talking to someone else who understood.  We were able to bounce research around and she sent me link upon link of priceless information that ultimately helped me heal.  We cried about it, shared our fears of never getting better and eventually our stories of progression toward health.  It’s imperative that you find someone to talk to and always remind yourself that it will get better.

    So for the exciting news?  I’ve been bursting with creativity over the course of the past few months and I just have to get back to blogging.  It might take me a few days to get things rolling again, but I’m finally ready to dive in and can’t wait to share what’s been on my mind.

    Lastly, a huge thank you to those of you who have checked in on me over the course of the past few months.  From my blogosphere buddies, to family, friends and my incredible boyfriend, Jake… Your support and kind words mean the world.  I’m looking forward to creatively reconnecting with you all 🙂

    Thursday Thanks – My Parents

    April 5, 2012

    I decided to start a Thursday Thanks series because as part of my New Years Resolutions, I promised myself to wake up thankful every morning.  There are a plethora of things to be thankful for on a daily basis, but like all New Years resolutions, the intensity of your commitment to them starts to fade after a while.  Since I deemed 2012 to be my best year yet, I knew I needed to get back to those commitments and goals and carve out some time weekly to reflect.

    That being said, this Thursday I wanted to highlight my parents who are actually here visiting me this week and I could not be happier to have them.  When I ventured to California after college, I honestly never looked back.  Moving home to Michigan was never an option, but with each passing year, it’s been harder and harder to be away from my family.  Thus, I love and appreciate every moment of having my parents in town when they decide to make the 3,000 mile trip – finally giving them a hug (which you unfortunately can’t do via Skype), spending some quality in-person time catching up, exploring new places and taking them to our favorite local spots.

    I tried to find a more recent picture of the three of us, but the one above from their wedding day kept sticking out to me.  Why am I in the picture?  My mom and birth father actually separated and divorced by the time I was 2 and Ken, (technically my step-father) became my dad from before I could even remember.  He’s never not been there for me and I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the tremendous role the two of them together have had in my life.  In addition to appreciating them individually for who they are as people and as parents, the two of them as a unit (and still completely head-over-heels for each other) is a blessing beyond words in my life.  For that, I’m thankful a million times over.

    San Francisco-ing

    April 2, 2012

    Last Wednesday, I flew up to San Francisco for a gorgeous few days of work and play.  I’m so in love with that city, it’s hard to put it into words and pictures never do it justice so I always wind up yearning to go back from the moment I hit the ground at LAX.  The architecture, the food, the history and the seemingly endless hills with panoramic views of the city from every street corner leaves me with the desire to pack my bags and find little a bay-windowed studio to call home.  Check out a few of my favorite weekend moments below.

    {Quick lunch break at The Melt at Stanford.  This place was amazing!  They only serve different types of grilled cheese sandwiches and soups for dipping.  YUM.  Side note: They’re expanding from 4 to 22 locations in 2012… Proof that a simple (but great) concept and design are a winning combination}

    {Platters of finger food for our Hope at Home tasting in Santa Cruz}

    {View of the Golden Gate from my friend’s rooftop as it started to light up at dusk}

    {Views from the top of Nob Hill}

    {So very envious of this rooftop (yes, I was doing some stalking).  Great little grilling/entertaining space with a patch of grass for a very lucky city pup}

    Thursday Thanks – Lily

    March 29, 2012

    Just over a year ago, our kitten was born and since we adopted her from the West LA Animal Shelter, we don’t really know much about her early days other than that she was found at about 2 1/2 months old wandering the streets of West Los Angeles alone.  I had been begging and pleading Jake for months to let me get a cat since he travels so often and he was adamant that we’d never have one because of his allergies.  For whatever reason, I was feeling a little down on my way home from class one day last May and decided that a trip to the shelter to visit the animals would cheer me up.  There was a playroom full of tiny kittens that weren’t available until the following week and then a feline room for the larger cats that I almost never stepped into, but something lead me into that room that day and I’m so glad it did.  With her tiny paw reaching out at me, I met Lily for the first time.  I convinced the man working there to let me take her out and hold her and from the moment she nuzzled up against me and started purring, I knew I had to take her home.  The following morning, after Jake met her and there were thankfully no signs of an allergic reaction, we made her ours and she’s been an absolute joy in our lives ever since 🙂

    I’m a firm believer that animals truly lift our spirits and offer unconditional love to those who need it most.  There are vast studies that show that with weekly doses of “pet therapy” patients in both nursing homes and hospitals show great improvement.  Additionally, having a pet has shown to do wonders for your stress levels and health.  Lily’s little spark-plug personality has been nothing short of fascinatingly entertaining for both of us and she’s been the perfect little addition to our home.  For that, I’m starting my first “Thursday Thanks” post with her.

    Wahooo!  I’m off to the San Francisco Bay area this morning and I can’t wait.  Tonight I’ll be helping out with a Hope at Home training and wine tasting with some lovely new Event Specialists and I’m thrilled to meet the new recruits 🙂  Since it also happens to be mine and Jake’s THIRD anniversary (holy moly, time flies!) we’ve decided to stay up in the city for the remainder of the week and weekend to celebrate.  See you Monday, LA!  Cheers!

    Restoration Hardware Spring Launch Party

    March 27, 2012

    Last Thursday, I was invited to attend the Restoration Hardware Spring Launch Party in LA (yes please) and it was gorgeous to say the least.  Their showroom on Beverly is nothing short of eye catching with a tremendous outdoor space attached and I’ve been looking for an excuse to drop in for a while now.  Everything about this space is absolutely perfect… from mirrored fireplace walls, to the reclaimed hardwood floors to the dark, fabric wall coverings cascading up the grand staircase.  Needless to say, as a huge Restoration Hardware lover, I was obsessed with nearly every room I walked into and had to capture a few (or 100) pictures to share.  Here are some of my favorites.

    {The Cameraman asked if I wanted him to move his tripod so I could get this shot… trying to be polite, I said no, but now I really wish I would have said yes.  How amazing is this mirrored wall?}

    {Restoration Hardware’s amazing signature crystal and iron chandeliers were a staple in this space}

    {Stunning}

    {Loved the continuous music sheet art as we walked from one room to the next}

    {Beautiful orbs}

    {Amazing idea for a non-working fireplace}

    {Rustic farmhouse dining table + leather egg chair + spotlights = heaven}

    {Naturally, I was drawn to this stunning floral display}

    {Inspiration for my future store… wink, wink}

    {Couldn’t get enough!!}

    {The floral designer himself, Eddie Zaratsian}

    {Please excuse me while I dive on in 🙂 }

    {In love}

    {Gorgeous cascading bird cage chandeliers}

    Wine Wednesday – Cookies & Corks

    March 21, 2012

    Alright… two loves of my life?  Cookies and wine.  Put them together and magic happens. Enter Cookies & Corks – an amazing company based out of Virginia that recognized there is nothing better in life than the above two paired together.  YES.  Gimme, gimme, gimme!  As part of this project that I’m working on, Cookies & Corks sent us some of their amazingness to try and I’ve got to say, they’ve hit the nail on the head.  Anyone who loves wine needs to give this a try immediately.  Seriously.  Now.  Lucky for me, I recently had the chance to try both the red and white wine pairing boxes, but today, I’ll chat about the white because the pairings were so delightful that I couldn’t wait another moment to share.

    First and foremost, there are three types of cookies in a box.  The White Wine box consists of Apricot Sage, Peanut Butter Chocolate and Ginger Molasses which pair well with Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc.  Since I didn’t have the middle two, I gave these a try with ONEHOPE Chard and Sauv Blanc and was blown away.

    1. Sauvignon Blanc + Apricot Sage = I was a little skeptical about this one.  The ONEHOPE Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite wines ever with its crisp, citrus finish and I was worried that the combination with the Apricot would make the pairing overwhelmingly citrusy.  Thankfully, I was wrong.  The lightness of the Sauvignon Blanc was just enough to create a more full-bodied citrus flavor with the Apricot (without being overpowering) while enhancing the savory sage to a level I never thought possible.  I like sage?!  I guess so.  Delicious.
    2. Chardonnay + Apricot Sage =  What a great combination.  While there was no over-the-top, spectacular or surprising finish, the two together were still extremely well balanced and enjoyable.  I tasted much more Apricot in this pairing than the Sauvignon Blanc + Apricot and a little less sage.  Scrumptious.
    3. Chardonnay + Peanut Butter Chocolate = AAAMAZING.  Wow.  Tasting this together was like putting a piece of chocolate covered fruit in my mouth, enjoying every last second of it and then, BAM!  Peanut butter with a tiny hint of salt.  There is so much perfection going on in this 5-10 seconds of flavor that I ate another.
    4. Chardonnay + Ginger Molasses =  This pairing actually wasn’t recommended on the box, but I’m so glad I decided to give it a shot.  The Ginger Molasses wine pairing suggestions were Gewürztraminer and Pinot Grigio, neither of which I had, but I did have some leftover Chardonnay in my glass.  Since Ginger Snaps are one of my favorite cookies, I gave it a whirl and fell in love.  The ONEHOPE Chardonnay is really well balanced (not too sweet, not too buttery, not too oaky) so it allowed the flavor of the ginger to magnify tenfold without any other obtrusive favors.  Being that I LOVE ginger, I loved this combination.
    Bravo, Cookies & Corks!  Can’t wait to try some more for next Wine Wednesday 🙂

    Green Machine

    March 20, 2012

    My favorite color in the world is green and for whatever reason, I couldn’t really explain why (other than the fact that it feels “fresh” to me) until a few days ago.  A friend of mine from work, Leila Khalil’s wedding was featured in the Spring 2012 edition of Martha Stewart Weddings.  I had a feeling her favorite color was green after visiting her office, but in the eight page spread, she explained why she chose to incorporate its many hues into her absolutely stunning nuptials: “I LOVE the outdoors and all things GREEN.  The color symbolizes GROWTH and RENEWAL which is what weddings are all about.”  I don’t think she could have summed it up any more perfectly.  In the spirit of the great outdoors and this little blast of gorgeous summer we recently had in California (that has now seemed to have disappeared), here are a few of my favorite fresh green pieces this season.

    1.  Sofa – $1,663 – Ballard Designs
