I’ve always been such a neutrals girl… until this year.  I’m currently so in love with Valentine’s Day and all things pink, red and sparkles and my desk at work is like an explosion of all things girly.  Thankfully, I got to take out some of my fem aggression on our VDay shoot for work (introducing our ruby red wine bottle) and couldn’t have had more fun.  We’re awaiting the professional photography, but had to share a few of my favorite iPhone pics in the meantime 🙂

Happy Monday! xoxo

Ohhhh Leo…

January 13, 2014

Screen Shot 2014-01-13 at 11.12.07 AM
So this happened over the weekend…..

Yes.  That is real life.  I’m still having a hard time processing it. I, like every girl in the entire world have been obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio for as long as I can remember.  And on Saturday, all of my wildest fantasies dreams came true.  Well, almost.

Huge thanks to BAFTA for always choosing ONEHOPE Wine for their BAFTA LA Pre Golden Globes Tea Party (Leo was drinking our Chardonnay).  I was able to chat with him for a brief 10 seconds where instead of chumming it up about something original and memorable (my amazing former boss, Bonnie is credited for discovering him), I was so starstruck and overwhelmed that I could only formulate a measly, “Congratulations!  Your performance in Wolf of Wall Street was absolutely unbelievable…. I loved every minute.  I’m Megan, by the way, from ONEHOPE Wine… you’re drinking our Chardonnay… thank you so much for the support.  Do you mind if we take a picture together?  I would love that so much.”   Like EVERYONE. Else. There.  FAIL.  He was so kind, so gorgeous, smiled during our entire 10 second exchange (please, just make me melt even more), but immediately after taking the picture, I was pushed and shoved away by the rest of the women swarming him… and that was it.

Did I mention that I love him?  <3 <3 <3

Happy Monday!

Cinnamon Orange Mulled Wine and Cocktail

December 9, 2013

IMG_9894

It seems so silly to me to be SO unbearably cold in 40-50 degree temperatures after growing up in the midwest, but almost at 5 years removed from frigid Michigan, my skin has become impossibly thin.  Mulled wines are a favorite of mine when the weather is cold and I’m looking forward to sipping on one of these tonight.  The amazing thing about this recipe however (aside from the fact that it is so delicious) is that it can be cooled and refrigerated to create a “syrup” if you will, to combine with champagne, creating an absolutely divine sparkling cocktail.  If you’re looking for a cocktail with the complexity of a mulled wine at lower temperatures, this is a wonderful option.  I recently served this at a party in both forms – warm for people looking to escape cool, fall temperatures as well as chilled and topped with sparkling for guests looking for something refreshing yet still festive.

Cinnamon Orange Mulled Wine

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Total: 20 minutes (if serving warm) / 3 hours (if serving cold)
Serves: 8 (if serving warm) / 12 (if serving with champagne as cocktail)

Ingredients

4 cups apple cider
1 (750 ml) bottle ONEHOPE Cabernet
1/4 cup honey
1 orange zested and juiced
10 cinnamon sticks
4 cloves
3 star anise
2 oranges peeled for garnish

Additional Ingredients for Cocktail

1 (750 ml) bottle ONEHOPE Sparkling Wine
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon orange zest or rind

Directions for Mulled Wine

1. Combine the cider, wine, honey, orange juice, zest, 2 cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise in a large sauce pan.
2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
3. Pour into mugs and garnish with orange peels and cinnamon sticks.

Directions for Cocktail

1. Follow steps 1 and 2 above, but put aside 1 teaspoon of orange zest or a small piece of rind for your rimming sugar.
2. Remove pan from heat and set aside for 15 minutes.
3. Using a strainer, remove the excess orange rind and cinnamon sticks from your mixture and transfer into a carafe or bottle to cool. I like to funnel them into these with a fun and festive label or tag.
4. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until cold. (Can store refrigerated for up to one week).
5. While mixture is cooling, create your rimming sugar by combining sugar, cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of orange zest/rind in a food processor and blend until thoroughly mixed.
6. Rim glasses in sugar, pour glass half full with cooled mulled wine mixture and top with Sparkling.

CHEERS!

Wine Wednesday (HalloWINE Style)

October 30, 2013

When one of our co-founders at work suggested that we put an adult spin on Halloween and pair our wines with classic trick-or-treat candy, I was game.  She conducted a tasting and figured out which flavors would work the best with one another before passing it over to me to style and shoot.  The office was FULL of goodies yesterday so we all did our own little tastings and they were AMAZING… Some of the pairings were really different and unique so I didn’t expect to like them all as much as I did, but I guess you really can’t go wrong with candy and wine!  It was tough to pick a favorite.  Thought I would pass these along for a little Halloween inspiration in case any of you wanted to give it a whirl on your own!  And I know it might be tempting, but try not to eat all your kids’ Halloween candy 😉 Cheers!

Fall Cocktail Shoot – Sneak Peek

October 21, 2013

IMG_9806

Eeeeee!  Our cocktail shoot from Friday went SO well and while we still have a few more looks to shoot today, I couldn’t help but share one of my favorites.  I have a well documented obsession with Carrara marble and recently picked up one of these French Pastry Slabs for my new place.  It serves as such a beautiful surface for styling and I knew we also needed one for shoots at the office.  I couldn’t possibly be more excited with how insane it makes the ingredients pop.  I’m so used to shooting directly on our huge farmhouse table, which is great when you’re going for really rustic, but I wanted to chic things up a bit and this made all the difference in the world.  Keep in mind, we haven’t edited a thing yet, so this is just a raw image.

Ok, ok and one more… 😉

cider punch-b2b

Since arriving back to scorching hot LA after the most amazing autumn week in New York, I’ve been gripping onto anything fall related with all my might – Pumpkin Spice Lattes galore, “Leaves” scented candles everywhere… I’m a little crazy about this season.  Today I’m headed to the office to shoot all of our fall cocktail looks and can’t wait to start whipping up some delicious liquid libations!  The creative side of my job is my absolute favorite and there are few things I love more than styling gorgeous shoots to share on blogs and across the interwebs 🙂  We were searching for inspiration yesterday and stumbled across this amazing food blog, Verses From My Kitchen.  Everything is so perfectly styled and I love every last shot.  We’re attempting to make a variation of this recipe today and can’t wait to share!  Stay tuned and have a lovely fall weekend!!

Holiday Happenings

December 4, 2012

The week leading up to Thanksgiving through New Years Day make up my absolute favorite time of the year.  From the anticipation of time with family and friends to delicious food and Christmas music, there is a feeling in the air that is just electric.  The past week has been a busy one, but full of productivity and a few of my favorite holiday traditions.

Weekly_ChristmasJPG

  • My absolute favorite stationary company ever, Rifle Paper Co. had an amazing Cyber Monday deal that I took full advantage of.  We ordered some holiday cards and gift tags for my boyfriend’s annual holiday corporate gifting… but I seriously might have to sneak a few!  How adorable are they?!
  • Gorgeous Friday night sunset from our rooftop balcony at work.  Perfect ending to the week.
  • I’ve been dying to put our Christmas tree up since before Thanksgiving, but it finally happened over the weekend.
  • There she is!  All decorated.  More pictures to come 🙂
  • I know I’ve openly complained about this in the past, but our apartment has ONE (yes, ONE) closet and a tiny pantry.  Our old console table, just wasn’t cutting it and we really needed something that would allow for more storage so that we could use our minuscule make-shift pantry for what else?  Food.  I finally caved and bought an Ikea Malm in white and intend on decking it out in Overlays.  Definitely a project for a rainy winter weekend and I can’t wait.  For now, she’s a little plain Jane, but I couldn’t be happier to have a pantry that stores food instead of vases, crafts and cleaning supplies.  Plus, a white table instead of black really lightens up the hallway 🙂
  • And finally… our ONEHOPE Coffee has arrived!  We were like a bunch of kids on Christmas morning waiting as our President cut open the box and pulled out the bags for us to see.  What a wonderful Tuesday treat!

The Hardest Thing I’ve Ever Done In My Life: Paint Walls Black

November 28, 2012

No joke, people!  Painting walls black should be left strictly to the professionals 😉 But being that I had a budget for paint, supplies and nothing beyond that, I had to make do and painted our office black myself.  If you are going to embark on such a task, here are a few tips to follow (please feel free to comment with any others you might have).

  1. First and foremost, reconsider doing this yourself.  Sorry, but I have to say it.  Unless you are one of the few who find taping off a wall, painting and then repainting at least 1-3 more times therapeutic in some way, really reevaluate your budget and see if there is room to hire a painter.  You will not regret it.
  2. If you decide to move forward, buy only the best paint and supplies.  This is an absolute MUST.  Buy only the best grade of paint.  In my case it was Aura by Benjamin Moore (~$60/gallon) and thank GOD I went with this one (more on that later).  Additionally, use the best rollers and brushes possible and invest in a brush that extends so that you can go from the top of the wall to the bottom in one clean motion.  For real, this will cost you an additional $4.  Do it.
  3. Use Frog Tape.  This stuff is the best.  Apply it as you would any other painter’s tape and to activate the adhesive, run a damp cloth over the tape before you begin painting.  There is a huge difference between Frog Tape and regular painter’s tape.  You will understand the magnitude of that statement after using it for the first time.
  4. To prime or not to prime?  Since the paint I selected was a primer/paint in one, I opted not to prime my walls first.  If I were to do this again, I would definitely still prime the walls even though the guy at the paint store told me I didn’t need to.  I like to think that primer/paint combos are kind of like those shampoo/conditioners in one (does anyone even use those?) and to achieve the best look, you need to keep the two separated.  However, if you are going to prime your walls first, do save yourself some time and ask that they pre-tint the primer (a little tip I learned on YouTube AFTER I already started painting).  If you are painting your walls black, your pre-tinted primer would be some shade of grey instead of white… and painting black over grey is WAY easier than painting black over white.
  5. Now that you’ve moved your furniture out and taped everything off, paint around the edges and any trim as you would normally.  However, do this once with a paint brush and then again with a small roller.  Any discrepancies in texture, thickness and application WILL show, including places where it has been painted with a brush as opposed to a roller.
  6. Paint the remainder of your wall with a roller and work from top to bottom.  You will need more than one coat so make sure your first coat is applied generously.  After applying my first coat in vertical strokes, I applied a second in W strokes (big mistake with black walls) so I applied the third coat in vertical strokes with a roller extender.  LIFE SAVER.  Being able to apply one row from top to bottom in one smooth motion was absolutely key.
  7. If the paint looks uneven while it’s drying [don’t freak out]……….. but………. it’s going to look uneven when it’s dry.  It isn’t going to look as bad when it’s dry, but it won’t even-out a ton when dry as lighter colors seem to do.  Take into consideration how much paint is on your roller more than ever before.  One stroke with medium coverage next to another stroke with slightly more paint on the roller is going to show.  Sorry, but it’s true.  Technique is absolutely key with black paint.
  8. Lastly, don’t take yourself too seriously (unless you are a professional painter).  It is not going to look perfect in every form of light shining from every which angle, but with some patience and practice, it’ll be pretty damn close… and it’ll be worth it!

More pictures to come!  If you have any questions or advice from experience, feel free to comment away 🙂

Thanksgiving

November 27, 2012

Every year, my boyfriend and I travel up to the San Francisco Bay area for Thanksgiving with his family.  We are usually rushing to get out of the city (along with millions of others) the Tuesday night or Wednesday before the holiday, but this year we decided to take a more relaxed approach and drove up on Thanksgiving morning which was surprisingly quick.  On Friday, we made the trip down to Pismo for a few quiet days by the beach… just what we needed to recharge and kick into holiday mode on Monday morning.  Take a look at some of my favorite moments from the weekend below.

Team Thanksgiving Dinner

November 21, 2012

Last week I posted about our chic Thanksgiving Table inspiration for my company’s HOPEgiving celebration.  It’s the first time we’ve had a Thanksgiving dinner together so we really wanted it to be special in terms of food, wine pairings and decor.  Our Online Marketing Manager has been making Thanksgiving dinner for her family since she turned 18 so she planned (and cooked!) an insanely delicious feast for us while I took control over the tablescape.  The head of our Foundation has been wanting to write a new company manifesto, so we used the Holstee Manifesto cut up into bits to give everyone some inspiration with their place card.  We all wrote a line that we live by and pieced the puzzle together over dinner which made for some wonderful team bonding.  Lastly, our next big venture is ONEHOPE Coffee so I made sure to include some coffee beans mixed in with the florals as well as on everyone’s place setting as a reminder to be thankful for the incredible opportunities we have ahead.  I have to say, it was an absolutely magical evening filled with amazing food (and wine of course!), ONEHOPE family cheer and excitement for 2013!  What a great beginning to the holiday season!

PS: View Lauren’s to-die-for menu here and more on my tablescape and decor here 🙂  Happy Thanksgiving!!!
